A mask that doesn't seal to your face ruins everything. Test fit without straps: place the mask on your face and inhale gently through your nose. It should hold itself in place with light suction. If it falls off, it doesn't fit your face shape. Try multiple masks at a dive shop before buying.
New masks fog because of a silicone residue from manufacturing. Scrub the inside of the lens with toothpaste and rinse thoroughly before first use. Before every session, spit on the inside of the lens, rub it around, and rinse lightly. This remains the most effective defog method available.
Breathe slowly and deliberately — in through the mouth, out through the mouth. Most beginners breathe too fast and get CO2 buildup that causes anxiety. Practice with your face in water in a pool first. With a dry-top snorkel, you can duck below the surface briefly without flooding the tube. With a classic snorkel, blow forcefully before inhaling after any submersion.
Use slow, long, flutter kicks from the hip — not the knee. Knee-bending kicking is inefficient and tires your legs quickly. Keep your arms at your sides while moving; only use your arms to control direction. Good fins and proper kick technique let you glide effortlessly for hours.
Never snorkel alone. Always snorkel near a boat, shore, or float marker. Be aware of currents — snorkel across currents rather than against them. Avoid touching coral (it damages the reef and can cut you). In open ocean, wear a brightly colored vest or float tube so boat traffic can see you.
You need to be comfortable in water, but you don't need to be an accomplished swimmer. A life jacket or inflatable snorkel vest lets non-swimmers snorkel safely near the surface. Most snorkel tour operators require at least basic water comfort, not formal swimming ability.
Dry-top snorkels have a float valve that seals the tube when you go underwater — you can duck below without the tube flooding. Classic snorkels are simpler and slightly easier to clear, but you'll inhale water every time you submerge. For beginners, dry-top is more forgiving.
